Tukutuku — AUT

Innovative design and sustainable practices harmoniously intersect, creating a space that inspires and sets a new standard for environmental responsibility.

AUT A

Named by Ngāti Paoa, Tukutuku reflects the interwoven connections between people, place, and purpose, much like the traditional lattice work of tukutuku panels. Originally known as AUT A1 during the design and building process, this state-of-the-art facility now houses the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences and the School of Education, offering a dynamic space designed to inspire collaboration and learning.

Jasmax’s innovative approach to design fosters an environment that encourages academic success, serving as a connected hub for students. Tukutuku stands as AUT’s most sustainable building yet, contributing to the university’s distinction of having the lowest CO2 emissions per square metre of built space in Australasia.

Harrows played a pivotal role in supporting the sustainability vision by providing  a range of New Zealand-made furnishings that meet GreenRate™ Level C and PlatinumHEALTH™ HealthRATE™ certifications, ensuring the products have been made in the most ethical and planet-friendly way possible.

As part of this commitment, Harrows replaced the traditionally synthetic layers of melty fibre upholstery wrap with Wisewool needle-punched blanketing in all the soft seating provided by Harrows, further enhancing the building’s sustainability. Harrows’ dedication to responsible manufacturing aligns seamlessly with the ethos of the Tukutuku project, contributing to a space that’s truly built for life.
