The beauty of Bluestone

The Slab Collections features a solid stone made from Bluestone, quarried and machined locally by Timaru Bluestone before it begins its life as a beautiful piece of furniture.

From the eruptions of Mt Horrible to the west of Timaru flowed lava rivers that cooled into long bluffs and ridges of a blue/grey vesicular basalt rock, run through with veins and features the equal of which is not found anywhere else in New Zealand. Each piece of rock is unique and creates a product that will last for generations. It is naturally beautiful, genuinely New Zealand and its versatility is unparalleled.

Iroko Hardwood.

Iroko is a hardwood timber sourced from the west coast of Africa. When freshly milled or machined, the timber is variable in colour from pale yellow to golden or medium brown. The timber tends to darken over time and takes on a silver tone with age and exposure to the elements. It’s a robust timber perfect for outdoor furniture.

At Harrows our Iroko products are dispatched with an 'oiled' finish or you can opt for a 'dark oiled' finish.

Care and Maintenance for Outdoor Furniture.

Outdoor timber is best cleaned with a cloth moistened with water or a mild soapy solution. When scrubbing tougher stains, use water and white vinegar. Scrub in the direction of the grain to prevent noticeable scratching. Bird droppings must be cleaned off as soon as possible, as they can cause permanent stains and corrosion.

Regular oiling with Sikkens Cetol HLSe or a similar outdoor oil will keep them looking pristine.

About the Designer - Mark Suckling

Mark Suckling was born in Timaru, New Zealand and learned the craft of furniture making in the family business. Inspired by his surroundings and industrious tendencies, He began to create his own designs to feed a design driven market hungry for NZ designs and NZ made.

As Managing Director of Harrows, he is in a unique position to see designs through from concept to prototyping to the marketplace with an exceptional hands-on approach. Mark doesn't believe design needs to be complicated, but it should be both functional and aesthetically exciting.
