An elegant mountainside cafe staying true to its location
Whau Cafe
Located inside a historic building perched on Mount Eden that dates back to 1926, Whau Cafe promises to live up to the values held by the historically rich premise. Dane Tumahai, his partner Jacqui Perillo, her daughter Georgia and the team at Millé have gone to great lengths to incorporate the historical, spiritual and cultural background of the location into the design.
The interior retains many of the building’s original features but combines them with smart, modern touches that subtly tie into the story of the land on which it sits. Harrows was able to deliver a range of personal furniture for the cafe, including custom beech table tops that have topographical maps of Auckland’s 14 volcanic mountains engraved into their surface, and red Piazza Chairs to represent the Manukau Harbour.
Considering the prolific views it boasts from its mountainside location, is positioned to become a favourite spot, especially over the summer.
